Picture in Time: Seaton Tramway 14

We are again in Devon for this edition of Picture in Time as we feature an image of one of the converted standard gauge trams – no. 14 in the Seaton fleet.

Taken in 1980 this image shows 14 outside the Riverside Depot whilst still under restoration, a restoration which would take a further four years with entry into service not coming until 1984. 14 is in fact rebuilt from Metropolitan Electric Tramways 94 (renumbered 2455 in the London Transport fleet) and has been rescued by enthusiasts all the way back in 1960 – some 25 years after it had been withdrawn from service. Eventually finding its way to Seaton the decision was made to covert the tram into a single decker with the middle section of the tram removed and either side reconnected to allow it to operate on the more narrow gauge. As mentioned above it returned to service at Seaton in 1984 and remain in service to this day.

In this image we see the progress being made on 14 outside Riverside Depot with the ends already repainted whilst the sides are still in progress.
