Picture in Time: Croydon Tramlink 2542

One of the features of the early days of the Croydon Tramlink system was the number of advertising liveries carried on the trams and we take a look at one of these today.

Today if you visit the Tramlink system you will only see one advertising livery on the trams but the situation was very different back in the early years of the 20th century with a number of the CR4000s having advertising vinyls. One of these was 2542 which carried a mainly yellow design for Amey Construction – a firm who were part of the consortium who constructed Tramlink. A very simple design featuring a yellow base and very limited signwriting the design was applied before the system opened in October 1999 and was removed by the end of 2001.

In this view we see the tram on 12th January 2001 as it comes up Tamworth Road and is about to cross the top end of North End with a route 3 service to New Addington.
