Eccles line suspension after overhead problems

Manchester Metrolink services on the Eccles line were suspended for several hours on Thursday 17th January after a problem with the overhead caused a pantograph to smash. The incident happened close to the stop at Broadway around 1230 with the pantograph coming off the roof and smashing a side window.

The exact reasons for the pantograph coming off the roof are not yet known but it has been confirmed that there was an issue with the overhead although this doesn’t normally cause the whole pantograph to collapse in quite this manner.

No-one was injured in the incident but M5000 3103 did suffer damage to a window on one side, as well as the obvious damage to the pantograph.

Services were suspended between Cornbrook and Eccles/MediaCityUK whilst the stricken tram was removed and repairs made to the overhead. A normal service finally started to get underway just after 1845.
