September Review – Isle of Man: No.19 – Tunnel Cars in service

Often used on the main service in addition to the Winter Saloons there remain four Tunnel Cars available for service and they are all in regular operation today on the Manx Electric Railway.

9 – the highest numbered of the remaining Tunnel Cars – is also the illuminated motor on the Manx Electric Railway. However, in this view it is still very much daylight so there is no need for its lights to be on – although they can be spotted in this photo – as it heads back to Derby Castle with trailer 40 for company on 5th September.

Ever since its last major overhaul and repaint into the Blue and Ivory livery of the Douglas & Laxey Electric Tramway Tunnel Car 7 has become a celebrity in its own right making a pleasant change in a sea of red liveried trams on the MER. With matching trailer 48 in tow the trams are seen here approaching Port Jack on 5th September.

5 is captured on camera in this image on the final southern approach to Laxey Station. This is anniversary day itself – 7th September – and so it not only has trailer 42 behind but also Wagon 8. (All Photographs by Gareth Prior)
