A consultation has been launched to find people’s views on how the Manchester Metrolink extension to Oldham town centre will run through the town’s Manchester Street roundabout. It had originally been planned that Metrolink would travel under the roundabout in a tunnel but it has since been decided that the line will remain at street level.
It is now proposed that the line will run through Westwood Business Park, follow Middleton Road, head through Manchester Street roundabout at street level before passing under John Street and on to the proposed stop at King Street.
It is believed that this plan will improve the ride quality for passengers and will also deliver safety improvements with pedestrian crossings and cycle crossings provided in place of the current subways. Traffic signals will also replace the existing traffic arrangements on the roundabout and a new link road in the roundabout is to allow traffic to join Oldham Way more directly from the south.
The consultation into the proposals will be open between Wednesday 1st February and Wednesday 25th April.
