Picture in Time: Snaefell Mountain Railway 2

In this edition of Picture in Time we are back on the Isle of Man for an image from the Snaefell Mountain Railway in 1992.

The vehicle illustrated in this image is no. 2, which was built in 1895 as one of six cars for use on the proposed railway up to the summit of Snaefell. Entering service in the same year, as with all of the cars it was not originally fitted with glazed windows although these quickly followed. It spent a period in the nationalised green livery in the late 1950s/early 1960s before reverting to the standard fleet livery as seen today. Over the years the car has undergone several periods of overhaul with the last of these being completed in 2014, enabling the car to return to service that summer, once again carrying standard fleet colours.

It is 26th August 1992 that we catch up with no. 2 as it waits at a damp Laxey Station ready for another trip up to the summit although it doesn’t appear as if there are many prospective passengers!
