Advert livery changes north and south

Both London Tramlink and Manchester Metrolink have seen some advertising livery changes in the past couple of weeks with the former seeing the application of a new vinyl wrap whilst in Manchester we won’t be thanking Crunchie any more!

The tram on Tramlink to receive a new livery is CR4000 2537 which has received an advert for Turkish Airlines. This is the second tram to receive vinyls for this sponsor with 2542 previously carrying a red based advert for Turkish Airlines which was removed at the start of February.

Meanwhile in Manchester after a period of trams being in advertising liveries the entire fleet of M5000s is now in standard fleet livery with the Crunchie vinyls on 3001 and 3007 now having been removed. Although all areas of bodywork on trams are clear of advertising 3035 has recently received window adverts asking “What could travel look like in 25 years?”

There are a few of these window adverts including on trams 3094 & 3096
Passengers wish they would stop covering the windows with these vinyls, apart from making the trams darker inside although we are supposed to be able to see out, it produces an oscillation that is bad for the eyes and can create epileptic fits with anyone suseptible.
The screening of passengers from the outside world also increases the opportunities for anti-social behaviour.

    • Raymond Luxury-Yacht says:

Is there any evidence that Contravision can cause epileptic fits, or is it just presumption? Personally I have no problem with Contravision, I can see out if it just fine and if a tram system wants to earn some more revenue that’s up to them. If passengers who have a problem with it then they are free to travel by some other means and take their money elsewhere.

  2. Clifford Stead says:

In total agreement, these adverts need banning! By all means put them on the bodywork but don`t cover the windows!

    • Ken Walker says:

Particularly with the one illustrated where the windows are completely covered but the bodyside is clear. Are they deliberately trying to wind passengers up?

  3. Peter Watts says:

It is interesting that there are different types on “Contravision”. As an example, the contravision used on the trams in Nice, France uses a larger hole diameter. Although the advert itself appears a little less colourful (less solid material), the effect is still the same and the viewing from inside is not much different from the buses they use with tinted glass. The trams in Strasbourg also use this type of contravision. However, the Sarrebrucken tram system uses contravision with the smaller hole diameter such as used in Manchester, thus making the advert clearer and more dense in colour, but more difficult to see out.

3094 also has the 2040 livery.
