More traffic management plans revealed for Edinburgh Tram construction work

Edinburgh Trams have announced the next stage of traffic management plans as construction work continues on York Place in the coming months. These latest plans have come about following discussions with both local residents and businesses.

As a result of these discussions it has been decided that the Albany/Broughton Street junction will open to all traffic from mid September with signalised pedestrian crossings being installed. Then from the end of November Princes Street will be reopened to general traffic between south St David Street and the east end.

Speaking about the changes Cllr Lesley Hinds, Transport Convener, said: “The tram works are making good progress and I am very pleased that we are now in a position to plan the traffic management around the next phase of work. We are committed to listening to the people that are most affected by the works, with the aim of minimising the impact as much as we can. We have taken the views local residents and businesses into account and they have helped shape the new arrangements. Their input has been invaluable and we will continue to liaise with them as we focus on the delivery of Edinburgh trams.”

The Council have also agreed to undertake a feasibility study to consider reopening  Shandwick Place to pedestrians and later buses from Lothian Road to Canning Street. This study will look to see whether it is still possible to hit the target date for completion if this was to happen whilst weighing it up against the benefits of improving access while the work is carried out.
