On Thursday 7th April, there was considerable disruption for passengers on the Blackpool tramway due to an incident at Rossall Square. Flexity 009 was involved in a collision with a car, which had apparently jumped a red traffic light and been driven onto the tramway crossing and into the path of the oncoming tram. Services were subjected to significant delays whilst the relevant authorities attended and the car was retrieved from its resting place on the tram tracks.
As is usual in such cases, 009 sustained some grazed front end panelling whilst the car came off much worse! This particular location seems to have become a bit of a trouble spot and has been the site of a few similar incidents in the recent past. Unfortunately, as long as there are motorists who are willing to take risks in order to potentially save a few valuable seconds from their journey, things like this will probably always happen. As far as is known there were no serious injuries, although the tram driver involved is understandably believed to have been visibly shaken by the accident.
