Nottingham Express Transit recognises Notts County legends

After a break the namings of Nottingham Express Transit Citadis trams has resumed with 226 the latest to receive a name – with Notts County FC legends Jimmy Sirrel and Jack Wheeler honoured. This should help to redress the balance somewhat following on from the naming of Incentro 215 Brian Clough who is of course connected with County’s city rivals Nottingham Forest.

The naming ceremony took place on Monday 8th February with a number of ex-players attending, this included Notts County’s all-time leading goal scorer Les Bradd.

Jimmy Sirrel and Jack Wheeler formed one of the most successful management teams in the history of Notts County with possibly their biggest achievement being promotion to the First Division in 1981. They passed away within a year of each other with Sirrel in 2008 and Wheeler in 2009.

Since the announcement that more trams would be named there had been a small campaign to get the pair recognised on the tram network and although they seemed to miss the official nominations process Nottingham Express Transit officials agreed to the naming last month as there was still one tram not allocated a name.

Following this naming only 225 and 231 remain without names.

Are there any trams named after Nottinghamshire cricketing heroes (or even England ones who excelled at Trent Bridge in test matches)?

Hooray! About time too. This Magpie is now a happy man.
