Picture in Time: Sheffield 287 & 530

The latest image in the “Picture in Time” series goes back into the black and white era of 1958 as we visit the original tram system in Sheffield for an image in the city centre at a location where you can once again take photos of trams.

This is High Street dropping down to Fitzalan Square on 8th November 1958 with the large C&A building in the background and just visible in the distance is the Yorkshire Penny Bank branch. Away from the scenery we have two trams in view both of which are carrying the later more cream version of the livery. At the front is 287 which was one of the domed roof trams built between 1936 and 1939 of which the sole survivor today is 264 at Crich with the tram just in front of that being one of the famous Roberts cars of 1950-1952, no. 530. Of course there are two Roberts cars still in existence with 510 at Crich and 513 currently at the East Anglia Transport Museum. Neither of the two trams in this photo survived beyond the end of the original Sheffield Corporation Tramways when it closed in 1960.
