Rain stops play on Metrolink

Parts of Greater Manchester were hit by nearly half of August’s average rainfall on Friday 14th August leading to the suspension of service on the Metrolink lines to the Airport and East Didsbury for several hours. The torrential downpours led to severe flooding on the lines which meant it was not possible for the trams to pass the area safely.

Services to East Didsbury and the Airport were suspended shortly before 1030 with no services at all on these lines until 1145 when trams were able to run again between Sale Water Park and the Airport. Flooding was reported at Trafford Bar – where the East Didsbury/Airport line leaves the Altrincham route – and Firswood which led to the decision to suspend the service to allow the waters to subside. The decision was finally taken at around 1500 to resume full operations on both lines although residual delays remained as the service was reformed.
