Picture in Time: Manchester Metrolink 1003

As we continue our Picture in Time series today we are back on Manchester Metrolink with the featured tram being a vehicle which has been in the news recently – 1003.

Our view of 1003 shows it at the original Market Street stop on 29th March 1993, nearly a year after the tram had carried its first fare paying passengers. 1003 arrived in Manchester on 5th November 1991 and had actually entered service on the very first day of operations 6th April 1992. We only went through its claims to fame last week following its movement to the East Lancashire Railway for storage ahead of its use as a training vehicle for the Greater Manchester Fire Service so we won’t do so again although of course probably its biggest claim was when it was reliveried in the Silver and Yellow new fleet livery as the basis for a centre advertisement and it was that form that it was withdrawn in on 12th November 2013. It remained on Metrolink property until 11th April 2015 when it probably became the last T68 to run under its own power on Metrolink tracks running to the East Lancashire Railway.
