Next phase of Supertram rail replacement works announced

The 2015 phase of rail replacement works on Stagecoach Supertram will commence on 28th March and will continue until the end of August with four distinct phases of track closures. The first phase will be between Hillsborough and Infirmary Road and will affect services on both the Blue and Yellow routes although details of a revised timetable have yet to be confirmed.

This will be the third year of the essential and major rail replacement works which are said to be essential to enable the safe and continued operation of the Supertram network. So far 10km of track has been replaced so 2015 will see the halfway point reached in replacement (over 22km needs to be attended to in the end). The new rail improves passenger comfort and reduces noise in areas where the track is currently worn.

During 2015 the four phases of rail replacement work will be as follows:

* 28th March to 10th May – Hillsborough to Infirmary Road (Blue and Yellow routes affected)

* 11th May to 3 June – Park Square to Castle Square (all routes affected)

* 4th June to 28th June – Castle Square to Cathedral (all routes affected)

* 29th June to 28th August – City Road to Gleadless Townend (Blue and Purple routes affected)

Full details of rail replacement services and revised tram services for the first phase of the works are due to released later this month.
