VERA to celebrate 30 years later this month

The Volk’s Electric Railway Association (VERA) will be celebrating their 30th anniversary on Saturday 20th September with a special day of events on the railway along Brighton seafront. As well as special events during the day this will also be the latest late evening service of the year.

VERA was set-up in September 1995 when the manager of the railway at that time thought that it would beneficial if there was a properly constituted volunteer group to help the future of the line. Since then volunteers from VERA have helped with maintenance of the infrastructure and many are also fully trained drivers, helping to cover for paid staff and also taking the controls when the railway runs during the evening on selected dates during the day.

Now to celebrate their significant 30 year milestone there will be a special event on Saturday 20th September. Between 1100 and 1500 there will be Punch and Judy performances on the workshop forecourt whilst the viewing gallery will also be open allowing you to see the engineers at work in the workshop. There is also a scale model of the Volk’s Electric Railway which will be on show.

Then as evening starts the service hours will be extended instead of ending by 1800. Volunteers will crew the trains until 2100 (weather permitting) with the trains set to be illuminated for the occasion.

Normal fares will apply on the day.

  • Another special event will be taking place on the Volk’s Electric Railway on Friday 26th September. This ticketed event will see Touched Theatre presenting a production of Murder on the Volk’s. This is an original murder mystery play co-written with a current Volk’s railway driver. To purchase tickets visit https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/murder-on-the-volks-tickets-1606830927559
