Tyne and Wear Metro performance edges up

The latest performance poster has gone up at stations across the Tyne and Wear Metro and once again its painting a more positive picture with it being higher than both the previous four weeks and also the same period in 2024.

Now, there may be some who would disagree that things are looking positive with performance. Regular travelers will tell you how there are cancellations of services, and general issues, but the stats don’t quite agree with that!

For the four weeks between 20th July and 16th August 2025 the figures tell us that 84% of services arrived on time (up to 3 minutes late and 30 seconds early). When you look at the previous four weeks in June and July the magic figure was at 81% and if you go back to 2024 then you have the same number then as well – 81% of trains were considered as on time.

Around the time that the poster was first noted at stations came the news that Simonside station (on the South Shields route) was to be closed because of structural issues with the platforms. Reported early on Monday 25th August 2025 the decision was taken to close the station to “prioritise the safety of customers and staff”.

Remedial works are to be carried out and the station is to be closed until at least Friday 29th August. During that time anyone wishing to use the Metro is advised to either use Bede or Tyne Dock which are around a 10-15 minute walk away from Simonside. For those who can’t walk that distance they are being told to use the station help point for assistance.
