Earlier this year we saw a new mural painted onto the shutters of a shop by Infirmary Road tramstop in Sheffield, and now come news of a new mural at the subway leading to Netherthorpe Road tramstop as part of a project initiated by Supertram, local councillors and Sheffield Hallam University. The mural celebrates the community’s connection to nature and travel – and yes it includes a tram, although this one’s a modern one!
The mural’s design was inspired by research conducted by 10 students from Sheffield Hallam University, who worked on a vision that reflects both the area’s diversity and the daily rhythms of commuters. It was painted by the students, who were taught and guided by Lick of Paint Festival Co-Directors Alastair Findall and Megan Russell.
Cllr Tom Hunt, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re really delighted to have supported the mural and to have worked collaboratively with residents, students, artists and Supertram to make it happen. The finished mural really celebrates the fact that Netherthorpe is a great thriving community with good public transport links.”
Neil Barraclough, Deputy Head of Engineering at Supertram, commented: “I’m delighted to see this project come to life after years of planning. The improvements to our infrastructure are fantastic, and it’s exciting to see Supertram featured in the design. It’s also truly heartening to see the community working together to upgrade the area for everyone in Netherthorpe.”
The project is part of Supertram’s work with the City Council to enhance public spaces and celebrate the city’s unique creative character and feedback so far has been positive. 78% of people surveyed agreed similar artwork would improve other tram and bus stops and 24% even suggested initiatives such as this made them feel safer. It has already been agreed that funding will be made available for a further mural to be painted on the rest of the underpass.
