Metro performance falls, increases and then falls again

We haven’t taken a look at performance on the Tyne and Wear Metro for a few months (the last time we reviewed it was at the end of May 2022) but the posters have continued to be put up at stations over the past five months or so. Since the 89% highs of May there has been a fall since and although there have been fluctuations it has remained fairly consistent and remained over 80% throughout.

Punctuality (three minutes late or 30 second early) during these past five months has been as follows:

  • 29th May to 25th June: 88% (2021: 86%)
  • 26th June to 23rd July: 81% (2021: 83%)
  • 24th July to 20th August: 84% (2021: 87%)
  • 21st August to 17th September: 85% (2021: 88%)
  • 18th September to 15th October: 84% (2021: 83%)

Also within this period, two further customer satisfaction surveys have taken place – one in May and the other in August 2022. Not that you would be able to tell much difference as the overall rating in both was 7.7 out of 10 (as a comparison the February 2022 survey was 7.8 out of 10).

The rating takes into consideration station equipment, information, cleanliness, security, ticketing and staff availability. Information remained the highest during both surveys (7.4) with ticketing and staff availability the lowest in the May survey (6.7) and ticketing (6.5) the lowest in the August survey.
