In Pictures: Work on Picardy Place tramstop

In this latest article looking at the construction works for the Trams to Newhaven project we are at the start of the line (the city centre end) as we take a look at work on the first tramstop on the line – Picardy Place.

As with the majority of stops on the extension – of which there will be eight – the stop at Picardy Place will feature an island platform and in recent weeks there has been good progress on the construction of this with the platform edging now in place and the start of the shelter being installed – tramstop signs are also being put up already. This will be the first stop on the extension and is in effect a replacement for the former terminus at York Place which has been removed to allow for double track to be laid along the entire length of the line.

This view shows the tramstop. The shelter is being installed here and we can also see the edging stones being put into place. The final surface is yet to be completed.

The new tramstop sign is also already in place. This side of the platform is for trams heading to the Airport. (Photographs x2 by John Hampton)

A few days later and there has been some more progress on the tramtop with the edging to the platform being worked on along with the shelter. This is looking west. The city council have now released plans for the rest of the traffic island, with work due to take place between January and April before trams start running.
