In Pictures: Leith construction update

We recently saw a pictorial update of what has been happening over the past few weeks in Trams to Newhaven project construction works at the city end of the line and now we go a little further along the line for this latest look at the works. Featuring shots at Leith Docks, on Constitution Street and at Foot of the Walk these photos are all courtesy of John Hampton.

On top of this progress, work is now due to commence on Ocean Drive between Rennie’s Isle and Tower Place from Monday 28th February with the set-up of the site due to take place over the weekend of 26th and 27th February. This will see traffic management arrangements introduced from this weekend.

Enabling works will also have to take place before the site is established and so from Tuesday 22nd February the boundary walls surrounding the Queen’s Quay developments will be removed. This removal is needed to accommodate the construction of the new tram route as well as to create walkways and localised access to the development throughout the works.

The work in this area is due to be completed by Autumn 2022.

The pillars at the entrance to the old Leith Docks were removed during the tram construction works but are now being replaced. On the right is a completed pillar with pedestrian archway alongside and on the left a partially completed pillar.

Looking along Constitution Street to the south from the junction with Bernard Street, the works are largely complete with the Shore tramstop island platform in the foreground and to the right the statue of Burns, now back in position.

The statue of Robert Burns (originally erected in 1898) was removed during the tramworks for safety and is now back but in a slightly different position. A time capsule has been placed beneath plinth.

A closer look at the plinth of the statue.

Looking south from the Shore tramstop along Constitution Street most of the work is completed. The tower on the left is part of St John’s Church constructed in the late 18th century but now converted to office accommodation

The Foot of Leith Walk tramstop is being constructed and will have the platforms as part of the footpath. The upstands at the platform edge are being cast in situ. (All Photographs by John Hampton, 12th February 2022)
