Picture in Time: Seaton 8

In today’s “Picture in Time” we include the last photo for now from Devon’s Seaton Tramway and include another of the older double deckers in action.

Although built to run in Eastbourne tram no. 8 was built when it was known the operation would be moving away to Devon and so it was wider than similar previous trams in preparation for when it would be regauged. Originally open top with a lower deck saloons at each end it would remain in this condition until 1992 when it became a complete crossbench style on the lower deck. But the big “claim to fame” for this tram is that it was the very first car to run in passenger service at Seaton running on 28th August 1970 for the first time between Riverside and Bobsworth Bridge.

This photo shows 8 at Colyton in June 1984 when it was in a green and white livery. The works tram is seen beyond the rope in the distance.
