Around the World in Trams: Madrid 1106

We return to Europe as part of our world tour this week with a trip to Madrid in 1972 – the last year of traditional tramway operation in the city.

This view shows no. 1106 operating on route 70 between Plaza de Castilla and San Blas which was one of the last two routes to remain as the tramway was wound down. The tramway started operation back in 1871 and 1972 was to be the end but just 35 years later in 2007 a new modern tramway would start running showing its not just the UK where trams have made a triumphant return!
