In Pictures: New cycle arrangements in Edinburgh

One of the controversies of Edinburgh Trams since opening has been the arrangements for cyclists in the vicinity of the tracks with threats of legal action from disgruntled cycling groups and the tragic death in May of a cyclist after she fell when her bike wheel got struck in the tracks and she was hit by a minibus. As we reported a few weeks the City of Edinburgh Council have been looking at this issue and have recently started to install new red cycle lanes providing the safest way to cross the tracks.

The idea behind the red lanes is that anyone riding their bikes within the red zone will be able to avoid getting their wheels stuck in the tracks which has caused several high profile injuries. This is just one step that the Council are urging cyclists to follow for their own safety including crossing tracks at least at 45 degrees and if they can’t they should get off their bikes.

Information is being placed around the city centre informing cyclists of the new safety measures.

One of the first red lanes to be painted on the road surface is this one to assist cyclists turning right from Princes Street to Frederick Street. 258 passes the cycle lane as it heads east to York Place. (Both Photographs by Roy Calderwood)
