Picture in Time: Sheffield 189

Another Sheffield tram which has survived as part of the national collection is no. 189 but it has been 35 years since this tram last carried passengers and it awaits funding and a space in the workshops before it can be considered for a return to service.

Sheffield 189 entered service during 1934 and was part of a batch of Standard cars constructed in the Sheffield Corporation Tramways workshops between 1933 and 1935. The tram remained in service until 1958 when it was withdrawn following a special enthusiasts tour after it had been selected for preservation (originally no. 195 was to be preserved but 189 was discovered to be in a better condition). 189 was resurrected for the final tram procession in 1960 and was transported to Crich soon after (in fact it was the need to find a home for the TMS’ increasing collection that led to the discovery of Crich). Entering service at Crich in 1966 189 saw three periods of operation up until 1980 when it was withdrawn from service and retired to the depots waiting workshop attention. To this day it continues to wait and can currently be found stored in the depots except for special occasions when it is used for photographic opportunities.
