Edinburgh Trams - Trams to Newhaven opens June 2023

Wednesday 7th June 2023 at 1200 was a milestone day on the Edinburgh Trams system as the Trams to Newhaven extension welcomed its first passengers following the completion of main construction works. Completed on time and within the revised business case budget of £207.3 million the almost 3 mile line sees trams continue beyond York Place to Newhaven with eight new stops opening at Picardy Place, McDonald Road, Balfour Street, Foot of the Walk, The Shore, Port of Leith, Ocean Terminal and Newhaven.

Test running started on Monday 13th March and had continued over the following almost three months with driver training underway on Wednesday 19th April and timetable testing on Thursday 18th May.

This collection starts during the timetable testing on 25th May and we gradually build up to the first day of operation which saw 258 leaving from Picardy Place (with accompanying piper) and 259 from Newhaven at around midday.
