Gallery 902: Around the World in Trams Special - San Francisco Trolleys 1974

In this collection of photos we travel across to San Francisco in 1974 to view the trolley cars in action as well as a quick look at some of the trolleybuses running at the same time. These photos were mainly taken on 31st August 1974 when as part of the National Railway Historical Society convention a tour was operated over the trolley lines operated by the Municipal Railway (better known as Muni). Approximately is PCC cars were used for this special tour with at least one from each class of car operated at that time. One of the sites viewed was construction of new tunnel ramps at the upper end of Market Street to allow for operation of Light Rail Cars for the future trolley subway under Market Street. This collection takes a trip on the line starting with the "Main Line" (between East Bay Terminal and the west portal of the Twin Peaks tunnel) before we move on to the J-line (Church Street), K-line (Ingleside), to Geneva Car Barn, L-line (Taraval), M-line (Oceanview) and finally the N-line (Judah). We then take a quick look at a few more trolleys, including works cars, and then add with some brief views of some trolleybuses. Photographer: Edward M. Koehler Jr.
