Frustratingly fascinating. I suggest standard gauge (4′ 8.1/2″). The terraced houses, hills, mills, gas works and stone-built (as opposed to brick-built) wall suggest Yorkshire. Possibly a suburban terminal spur with a reinforced concrete base. No sign of traction pole preparation or erection, so could it be a horse/steam tram line?

I initially thought it might be Dearne District but the mill chimneys seemed to rule that out as the Dearne valley was predominately a coal mining area. My second thoughts were Oldham / Rochdale or the SMHD area as the landscape seemed to indicate that area, but then I also thought perhaps Dewsbury /Wakefield areas which have similar features might be possible. The other possible location might be Barnsley in view of the Wentworth connection mentioned in the initial request for information . Food for thought perhaps.

I’ve been having a good look at these and old map sites too, so I’m thinking it might be Barnsley, with the photograph being taken from Eldon Street North, looking to Old Mill Lane? The houses on the left could be the ones left on Canal Street. If so, it would possibly be the electric lines being built? The area is pretty much changed these days. There is a road going up the far hill that might be Burton Bank Road. The gas lamp bases in both pictures are the same – are these typical of Barnsley too? Hope this helps.

Also, the loop is in the correct place according to the map from the LRTL Tramways of South Yorkshire and Humberside
