Gallery 866: Around the World in Trams Special - San Francisco Cable Cars 1974 & 1998

One of the significant tourist attractions in San Francisco there are now three remaining cable car lines of the 23 which were originally constructed between 1873 and 1890 and in this collection we take a look at both those in operation and also some historic cable cars in museums from earlier lines, with images from both 1974 and 1998. The three lines now run on a 3'6" gauge between Powell and Mason, Powell and Hyde and on California Street with around seven million annual passenger journeys recorded. Mainly a tourist attraction in their own right there are also some commuters to use them to get around San Francisco and they are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As with the more regularly featured historic trolley lines the Cable Cars are operated by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (Muni). There are 27 Cable Cars available for service on a rotational basis with two main types featuring: Single ended cars on the two Powell lines and double ended cars on the California Street line (with this latter line lacking any turning facilities at either end). Photographs taken in 1974 and 1998.
