Gallery 586: Picture in Time Special - Douglas Horse Tramway

In January 2016 we were shocked by the news that the Douglas Horse Tramway would never run again after Douglas Borough Council pulled the plug in the 140th anniversary year citing escalating losses experienced by the operation of the trams. Although hopes have been raised slightly since this original announcement that there may be a future for the Horse Tramway after all there is still a long way to go before any more positive news is received and so this Picture in Time special looks at the trams (and horses!) of the tramway in action in recent years. If you head to the Isle of Man now you will probably see at maximum eight different trams in action along the Promenade route (and that would be relying on some poor weather, really nice weather and a bit of luck) but it hasn't always been so limited. In this collection we take a look at 20 of the trams of the Douglas Horse Tramway plus one interloper.

Photographs in this collection were taken by David Mee, Gareth Prior & Tony Sullivan.
