Hello. Very interesting article, especially as I spent a few months there during my apprenticeship 1954 till 1960 with London Transport. Being subjected to the the fairly strict training programme to (hopefully) become fully trained Sheetmetal Worker it meant moving around departments ( work areas) within Chiswick Works, this also meant being sent to ‘the old tram depot’, for a few months. Training there was directed towards being taught the use of equipment used to repair leaking fuel tanks and repair/rebuilding vehicle radiators. This entailed using killed or raw spirits (zinc dissolved in hydrochloric acid) as a flux, all making for a very messy process. It was also very noisy, the guy I was instructed by was a normal type, trouble was I did not always understand what he said. After a while I just responded by studying his facial expressions and acting accordingly. Great days there despite that. Now just turned 85 my own history is being collated so all of this is helping the writer. Thanks again. Stan Bishop,
