Gallery 883: Around the World in Trams Special - Southern California Railway Museum 1981-2002

Pacific Electric 314, these cars were known as 'Blimps', 314 was built by St. Louis Car Co. in 1930 for the North Western Pacific Railway based in Northern California, 19 were sold to the PE in 1942 as they were short of cars because of the extra traffic generated by the war. These cars were nearly 73 feet long by 10'4" wide and seated 80 passengers and often ran in formations of up to 4 cars. The PE had a considerable amount of private right of way but there was also a fair amount of street track, it was a good job that American streets are generally a lot wider than those in the UK.
