Gallery 745: Tyne and Wear Metro Northern routes - June 2018

4062 to South Shields departing from Northumberland Park. Situated on the first section of the Tyne & Wear Metro to open on 11th August 1980, this station did not open until 11th December 2005. If the proposed reopening of the freight-only line from Newcastle to Ashington (and rebuilding of the abandoned section beyond Ashington to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea) ever goes ahead, Northumberland Park would become an interchange with the reopened line. The Ashington line closed to passengers, at the behest of Beeching and amid much local opposition, on 2nd November 1964 and the campaign for its reopening has been going on for several years now. Also proposed for reopening is the link line from Morpeth to the Ashington line at Bedlington which closed to passengers even earlier on 3rd April 1950.
