Gallery 745: Tyne and Wear Metro Northern routes - June 2018

4025 at Airport terminus. The Metro line from South Gosforth to Airport runs along part of the old Ponteland branch line of the North Eastern Railway that opened on 1st June 1905 and closed early to passengers on 17th June 1929. There was also a spur from Ponteland to Darrass Hall that opened in 1913 and closed to passengers at the same time (1929) and to freight in 1954 but freight to Ponteland remained until complete closure of the line on 14th August 1967. The line awakened from the dead on 10th May 1981 when its course was used for a new Tyne & Wear Metro service to Bank Foot, diverging from the North Tyneside Loop at South Gosforth. Bank Foot remained the terminus for 10 years until Metro services were extended further over the old Ponteland branch to Airport on 17th November 1991.
