Gallery 743: Tyne and Wear Metro Central - June 2018

View from the north end of the sub-surface Jesmond station. Just beyond, the Metro tracks join the original North Eastern Railway route from Manors, opened in 1864 and closed in 1978 to allow for the conversion of the line to light rail. The original route from Manors to the junction seen here has been abandoned apart from a short section south to the original and now disused 1864 station at Jesmond, where platforms still remain, for use as a head shunt. Until the replacement Metro station at Jesmond opened on 11th August 1980, passengers were ferried around on temporary replacement buses for two years. Since the opening of the Metro, passengers from Jesmond and stations north thereof wishing to go to Manors now have to change at Monument.
