Volk's Electric Railway - 3rd May 2025

The Volk's Electric Railway in Brighton is the UK's oldest electric railway having opened in 1883. Whilst a railway as opposed to a tramway, it is very much at the "light" end of the railway spectrum so falls into the category to be featured on these pages and that is what we do in this collection of images taken on Saturday 3rd May 2025.

This was the first day of long Bank Holiday weekend with a normal service in operation on the railway. That means there are two sets in service running every 15 minutes from each end between 1015 and 1815 (weekdays see the service end at 1715, whilst on a Tuesday and Wednesday the service begins at 1115 - except for July and August when Wednesday also has the earlier start time).

On this visit the two sets in service saw 6+10 working coupled together and 9 working solo. Meanwhile, in the Workshops at Halfway both 7 and 8 could be viewed.

The railway runs between Aquarium (by Brighton Pier) to Black Rock (a short walk from the Marina) with one intermediate station at Halfway (complete with faciltiies for passing). Much of the line is single track (with a token system used), although there are two passing loops provided on each half of the line (albeit not used in normal service) with all trains timetabled to pass at Halfway.
