Gallery 977: Trams to Newhaven project - Construction Works September 2021 |
Work on constructing the Trams to Newhaven project in Edinburgh has been continuing at a pace throughout 2021 and in this collection we take a look at how things had progressed by the start of September 2021. With track down in many locations - including crossovers - other infrastructure are also taking place at various sites along the 2.91 mile (4.69km) extension of Edinburgh Trams which is due to open during 2023.
The extension will leave the original line at York Place (with the tramstop there being closed to allow new tracks to be laid) and travel to Newhaven with much of the route along Leith Walk. Eight new stops will be added to the Edinburgh Trams network - Picardy Place (a replacement for York Place), McDonald Road, Balfour Street, Foot of the Walk, The Shore, Port of Leith, Ocean Terminal and Newhaven. There will also be space for overnight stabling of trams at Newhaven. With work having got underway in November 2019 we should now be over halfway through the construction phase - which although it has suffered delays, partly due to the pandemic, is said to still be on target for the first public trams to start running in Spring 2023. |
