Gallery 963: Around the World in Trams Special - Western Railway Museum, Rio Vista

In this photo we take a look at Key System 561. This car dates back to 1887 when it was pulled by small steam locomotives on the Second Avenue Elevated in Manhattan. It was finally electrified in 1903 and would remain in service all the way until 1942 in Manhattan when the line closed. It was then transferred to the Bay Area to run on the Shipyard Railway but this to be a very brief period of operation with the line closing in 1945. The Pacific Coast Chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society purchased it (along with 563) and after being used for specials on the Key Systems line it was stored in a yard before moving to Rio Vista Junction in 1960.
