Gallery 958: Crich Tramway Village - July 2021

In this latest trip to Derbyshire we feature two significant recent events - the Tramway Museum Presidents Evening on Saturday 10th July and more shunting on Sunday 18th July, including Newcastle 102 outside the Workshop - before we also take a view at trams in service on Tuesday 27th July.

On Saturday 10th July, the annual Tramway Museum Society Presidents Evening took place at the Crich Tramway Village, with the London County Council Tramways Trust's Ian Ross being instated as the Society's President for the next 12 months. In recognition of Ian and the LCCTT's significant contributions towards London trams at the museum, it was planned to have two of the cars they have supported - London County Council 106 and London Transport 1622 - operating for the enjoyment of those attending, with this being the first chance to ride on 1622 following its recent overhaul and repaint. Unfortunately, whilst running on test during the day, 1622 developed a controller fault but this was quickly resolved allowing it to carry passengers during the evening festivities under close workshop supervision, when both it and 106 completed two round trips of the line. Although the controller will require some further attention before 1622 can be approved for regular public service, it performed well enough on this evening. The catering department also provided an excellent barbecue to accommodate for the necessary Covid restrictions, making for a most enjoyable evening for the TMS members in attendance.

Then on Sunday 18th July there was another interesting day, with one of the recent workshop projects being seen outside for the first time in many months. Newcastle 102, which has been receiving a major overhaul funded by the Tramcar Sponsorship Organisation, is finally nearing completion and on this day it was moved out of the workshop to allow Blackpool 166 to be lifted. This tram last operated in 2019 and has not been required for service due to the reduced operating fleet resulting from the coronvirus pandemic; however it has now been lifted to allow for repairs to a motor bearing issue to be carried out. With 102 moved to road 6 for the day, 166 was jacked up, but the initial plan to remove the affected motor, then remount the car on its trucks and return it to the depot hit a snag when the a failed bogie pivot casting on the other bogie was discovered. So, both bogies have been moved to road 1 of the workshop for attention, with 166 itself staying at the back of road 2 after being placed on a set of accommodation bogies as a temporary measure. Finally, Newcastle 102 was moved back into the workshop - it is now stabled in front of the other long-running restoration project, London County Council 1.

This collection then concludes on Tuesday 27th July with a selection of images of the trams in service. This included the first appearance of Metropolitan Electric Tramways 331 in service since 2019 which was one of four trams in action on the day with Glasgow 22, Blackpool 167 and Berlin 223 006-4 also out and about.
