Gallery 933: Around the World in Trams Special - Sintra Tram |
This collection of photos again goes abroad as we return to the tram system in Sintra, Portugal with images taking between 1980 and 2012. The tramway - which runs for 11.5km between Sintra and Praia das Macas - opened in 1904 and was built to metre gauge. Initially a year round service, from 1953 it changed to a summer only operation and then between 1975 and 1980 no services ran at all with repairs to the track required. Services resumed in 1980 but the whole route wasn't open to start with, although since then 11.5km of the route has resumed operation in stages up until 2004 (a later extension beyond Praia das Macas was closed in 1954 and has not been used since and a section further into Sintra has also been abandoned). The line continues to have a fleet of American style cars in service with the majority having been built by J G Brill of Philadelphia for the start of the service. They are mostly in a red livery although 7 is finished in a yellow colour scheme.
