Gallery 928: Around the World in Trams Special - The Jacksonville Skyway

In this latest trip to the United States of America we feature something which is very different to our usual fare of trams and metros as it is a people-mover system around the City of Jacksonville which is now a monorail system having been converted and expanded in the mid-1990s. The current system can trace its history back to June 1989 when a 0.7 mile long three station line opened between Central Station and the Prime Osborne Convention Centre. At this point the cars were of rubber tyred people mover style used at many airports with propulsion via a continuous cable. This system was built and operated by MATRA but with an expanded system on the horizon this contract ended and a change in the system was to come.

Bombardier were awarded the contract to expand the system and the decision was made to convert it to a monorail with work starting in 1993 to expand the line with a section from Central Station to Florida Community College Jacksonville and then in 1995 on crossing of the St John's River. The original system closed on 15th December 1996 and Bombardier started working on the conversion to the monorail style system it now is. The original section subsequently reopened on 15th December 1997. A further extension came on 30th October 1998 when services started running to the South Bank area of Jacksonville and a final extension came on 1st November 2000 with a further two stations opened giving it a total length of 2.5 miles.

The cars which operate the service were built by Bombardier in 1997 with nine in total constructed (although one is numbered 110!). They have capacity for 56 but only 6-8 of these are seated. The depot for the cars is located off the South Bank line.
