Gallery 924: Around the World in Trams Special - Erfurt Stadtbahn

In this "Around the World in Trams Special" we head to the German city of Erfurt for a look at the metre gauge Stadtbahn. Erfurt is the capital of Thuringia in central Germany and its Stadtbahn system has a total route length of 28.1 miles (45.2km). The first horse tram ran in Erfurt on 13th May 1883 with electric operation starting from 20th August 1894. The system became a true Stadtbahn from 1997 with extensions also starting to be built from that time, the only lines which are don't run on their own right of way are those within the city centre.

The tram fleet today consists of two main types - Duewag MGT6D (built 1994-1998) and Siemens Combino (introduced from 2000 to 2012).
