Gallery 910: Around the World in Trams Special - Pennsylvania Trolley Museum 2020 |
This is the story of one man's hunt for a trolley car - West Penn Railways 832! Having been restored to service in June 2018 the car soon developed a traction motor fault and wasn't to return to action again until 2019. Since then our photographer - who is a member at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum - has made several visits to see the trolley but every time it has been out of action for one reason or another, making it a very elusive car! With Covid-19 hitting in 2020 it appeared another year would go by without seeing 832 but with a slight relaxation in restrictions and the Trolley Museum re-opening (albeit with the now familiar special procedures in place) Edward M. Koehler Jr. saw an opportunity to finally see the car in action. So it was on 17th July 2020 a trip was made to the museum with one of the main purposes to get West Penn 832, indeed contact beforehand with the museum had confirmed it would be one of two cars assigned to service on the day. But, and you've probably guessed it!, upon arrival at the Museum and while there was a trolley numbered 832 in service this was New Orleans 832 as the West Penn version had developed another fault! Not to be deterred Edward decided that maybe he needed to "sneak up" on the car and just appear and that day came on 28th September 2020 with a further trip. And this time West Penn 832 was in service - another trolley ticked off the list as not only been seen running but also to get a ride on!
Whilst this gallery is dominated by West Penn 832 we, of course, also feature other trolleys and vehicles at the museum as well as taking a trip along the line to see what's what at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum in 2020. Photos come from the two visits mentioned above as we end the year with what has become a relatively rare set of photos from 2020! * The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum is located in Washington, Pennsylvania and has a collection of nearly 50 cars, many from the Pennsylvania area but others from further afield. Tracing their history back to the formation of the Pittsburgh Electric Railway Club (PERC), formed in 1946, and set-up the museum in February 1954 as the Arden Electric Railway. The first official visitors were welcomed to the Pennsylvania Trolley Mueum in June 1963. The museum is generally open on selected dates from the spring to November each year.
