Gallery 906: Around the World in Trams Special - Connecticut Trolley Museum |
This latest look at a trolley museum in the United States of America takes a trip to the Connecticut Trolley Museum with photos mainly coming from August 2020 along with some earlier images. The Connecticut Electric Railway Associate (CERA) can trace it history back to 1940 when it was founded as a reaction to the abandonment of street car operations in and around the Hartford area. They soon acquired a 17 acre property located in East Windsor and an adjacent 3.2 mile former right of way of the Rockville branch of the Hartfordand Springfield Railway Company (which had been abandoned by 1926). Eventually a 1.5 mile track would be built whilst the museum has also built up a collection of nearly 60 vehicles. Unfortunately, the museum suffers from being in between the Seashore Electric Railway and the Shore Line Trolley Museum which while being of a similar vintage have become the East Coast giants in the trolley preservation field.
During this August 2020 visit the museum line was only running for half its usual length following storm damage the previous month. A significant amount of trolley wire and a few poles need to be replaced on the outermost portion of the line. The current operating fleet consists of Montreal Tramways 4, Springfield Terminal Railway 16, Fairhaven and Westville Railroad Company 355, New Orleans 736 and Connecticut Company 1326. As at August 2020 a couple of vehicles were also in the workshops including Connecticut Company 65 and Boston Elevated Railway 5645 whilst the next cars to head through the works will be Connecticut Company 3001 and Brooklyn Rapid Transit 169. In this collection we start off with a trip along the line seeing trolleys in service as well as the infrastructure before we then take a look at some of the other trolleys and associated vehicles which can be found on site. |
