Gallery 741: Trafford Park line construction - June 2018

Progress on the construction of the next Manchester Metrolink extension has been making good progress recently and in this collection we take a look at the state of work in early June. Work started on the Trafford Park extension with utility diversions in late 2016 but we have now very much reached the stage where visible signs of the latest Metrolink extension are starting to become apparent. The line will leave the current Eccles line just beyond the stop at Pomona with six new stops planned including a terminus at the Trafford Centre. With the extension also closely serving Manchester United's Old Trafford ground, the Imperial War Museum North and EventCity it looks set to be a very popular line when it opens to the public. It is currently anticipated that services will start in 2020 with a new service running to Crumpsall - to this end work is also underway to construct a new bay platform on the inbound side accessed by outbound trams via a facing crossover. Major work is also planned to connect the new line with the existing at Pomona with a 13 day closure due to start on Saturday 28th July. Photographer: Steve Hyde
