Coventry Very Light Rail - June 2025 |
In May and June 2025 trams returned to the streets of Coventry for the first time since 1940. But it was a very different type of trams to 85 years ago as the prototype Very Light Rail vehicle was in the city for testing on a short 220-metre demonstration line on Greyfriars Road and Queen Victoria Road. This is just an early phase of testing the new technology which not only includes the prototype vehicle but also an innovative form of track installation (which includes no utility diversions). Its hoped combined these will help to reduce costs for cities across not only the UK but worldwide who are considering rail based transport but have been put off by the high costs involved.
In this collection we include photos of the vehicle being tested along with some of the general infrastructure taken towards the end of the test period. With testing now completed the vehicle will return to the Very Light Rail Innovation Centre in Dudley and the track will remain in place to allow normal road traffic to drive over it (and thus hopefully further proving that the technology they have used will be able to be implemented in a real-world environment). In the future a longer demonstration line is planned for further testing. * To read more on "Riding the Coventry Very Light Rail" read this article written by Ken Jones, and if you want some video footage of the tests go to YouTube for a video from Bob Hodges Transport DVDs. |
