Volk's Electric Railway 140th Anniversary - August 2023

On 4th August 1883 Brighton welcomed a new innovation on its seafront - an electric railway designed and built by Magnus Volk. Known as the Volk's Electric Railway the line has changed over the past 140 years and now runs from a station at the Aquarium to Black Rock with one intermediate stop at Halfway. To celebrate this anniversary the Volk's Electric Railway Association (VERA) and Brighton & Hove Council teamed up to organise a series of special events over the weekend of Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th August 2023.

This included special line-ups, a Procession of all the operational trains on the line plus the recent arrival ex-Southend car 9 and evening running.

In this gallery we actually start off by taking a look at normal operations on the line in July before we get going with the special events on the first day of the weekend. We include photos of the trains being lined-up before the official opening of the event with speeches from television personalities Tim Dunn and Nicholas Owen. There are then images of the Procession before we end with some more general images on the line in action.

Photographs were taken between Wednesday 20th July and Sunday 13th August 2023.
