Blackpool Tramway - North Station Testing

Over nine days in late June and early July, all tramway eyes in Blackpool were turned towards the extension to Blackpool North Railway Station with the first daytime testing of the line taking place. Commencing on Monday 27th June it was planned that there would be five full days of testing during that week but after a few teething problems were experienced during the week it was extended into the following week.

In this collection we take a look at some of the trams which were used for the testing, which was intended to check that the signals were working for trams and other road traffic along with checks of the infrastructure. Starting off with just one tram in use by the end of testing four trams were being used concurrently. Both curves to the Promenade line were regularly used with trams having to run north to Cabin to turn in between runs.

During the testing - which took place 27th, 28th, 30th June and 4th, 5th July - nine different trams were used: 001, 005, 006, 010, 011, 013, 014, 016 and 017.
