West Midlands Metro Westside extension opens - July 2022 |
Originally due to open at the end of 2021, the second phase of the Birmingham Westside extension on the West Midlands Metro finally welcomed its first passengers on Sunday 17th July 2022. With trams running up to every 12 minutes (during the day - every 15 minutes during the evenings) the opening of this extension sees three more stops join the network at Brindleyplace, Five Ways and Edgbaston Village. Mainly built without overhead the last section to the new terminus does have wires installed.
As well as the extension opening, the same day saw the return of trams through Birmingham City Centre (between Bull Street and Library) for the first time since the entire service was suspended in March after the bodyside cracks were discovered on the Urbos3 trams. This collection starts off on the first day at Wednesbury Parkway as we take the first tram to run to Edgbaston Village - 42 - and we then feature many of the trams which ran on the first day at various location before we end the gallery with a few photos from later on in the first week of operation. For the record the first day saw 42, 45, 44, 34, 40, 43, 41, 38, 18 and 39 all in service. |
Photographers: Mark Cufflin, Ken Jones, Michael Morton, Dan Noon, Andy Walters & Tim Walton Photographs were taken between Sunday 17th & Thursday 21st July 2022. |
