Pictue in Time - Blackpool Tramway 10th Anniversary

4th April 2012 was the start of a new era on the Blackpool Tramway with services getting under way on the newly upgraded tramway. With Bombardier built Flexity2 trams running the core service (16 initially with a further two following in 2017), updated infrastructure and platforms to allow level boarding for all it was a major change for the tramway, which had been open since 1885. Things didn't quite kick off smoothly with the very first tram (006) to Fleetwood derailing on the Esplanade due to a build up of sand but after that things soon started to settle down as Blackpool got used to having a modern tram system once more. And for those who still wanted a bit of heritage tram action the Easter Weekend would see the start of a heriatge tram operation.

In this collection though it is the Flexity2 trams that we feature during their first few days in service. The complete fleet of 16 were not yet in the resort (013-016 were to follow in the coming months) and during those first few days only 001, 002 and 004-011 would run in service. It was the first time since September 2009 that trams would run all the way from Starr Gate to Fleetwood and with pleasant Spring sunshine in evidence for much of the time, the trams were busy as people were intrigued to see what the future of the tramway was.
