Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft - Isle of Axholme Running Day October 2021 |
The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft is home to the world's biggest collection of historic trolleybuses, as well as several motorbuses and two tramcar bodies. One of the biggest events to be held at the museum since its re-opening after an enforced closure in 2020 due to the Coronovirus pandemic was the annual 'Isle of Axholme running day' on Sunday 17th October 2021, organised by the Doncaster Omnibus & Light Railway Society as a joint venture with the museum. As well as six trolleybuses in service, the event featured visiting buses, vintage cars and other vehicles, trade stalls in the depot and other extra attractions. This special photo gallery shows some of the highlights from the afternoon of the event showing a large and varied selection of vehicles.
The museum is open to visitors on selected weekends during 2022, commencing on 26th March, and anyone with an interest in general British transport history is encouraged to visit. The site is run entirely by volunteers, and good progress has been made in recent times, with some potentially exciting plans for future expansions announced recently. A full programme of events has already been confirmed for the year ahead, which includes a commemoration of 50 years since the closure of Britain's last trolleybus system in Bradford.
